An Associated Press poll of news editors and news directors concludes that the top story of 2011 was the Navy SEAL operation into Pakistan that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden.

Story number two was the Japanese earthquake and tsunami that resulted in thousands of deaths and the leak of radiaton from a nuclear plant.
