Obama blasts House GOP on student loans vote
WASHINGTON - President Obama blasted House Republicans for passing a bill that cuts funding from his health reform law to keep interest rates down for student loans.
While speaking at Washington-Lee High School in Virginia, Obama chided the legislative record of House GOP’ers.
“The Republicans in the House voted just voted to keep giving billions of taxpayer dollars every year to big oil companies raking in record profits, they just voted to let millionaires and billionaires pay lower tax rates than middle-class workers, they even voted to give an average tax cut of at least $150,000 to every millionaire in America and they want you to pay an extra $1,000 a year for college,” Obama said. “No, no. That doesn’t’ make sense.”
House Republicans recently passed legislation that would prevent student loan interest rates from rising but Obama threatened to veto the bill because Republicans want to offset the bill with cuts to the Department of Health and Human Services. Democrats have argued that these cuts would be detrimental to many women’s health programs.
Congressional Republicans have criticized Obama for using the student loan debate to distract voters from focusing on the economy, but Obama shot back by linking the economy and the pursuit of a college education.
“Making sure our young people can get an education? That’s one of the best things we can do for our economy,” he said.
