Egyptian power struggle heats up following Clinton visit

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton went to Egypt to meet with the new president, Mohammed Morsi, and the field marshal who heads the military, to try to convince the two sides to engage in dialogue to facilitate a transition of power from the army to civilian control. Instead, her efforts were publicly rebuffed by the military.

The field marshal she met with issued a statement following their Cairo meeting saying the military would not hand over power to a “certain group” – a reference to the Muslim Brotherhood that Morsi represents.

Clinton came armed with a debt relief package for the Egyptian government worth as much as $1 billion.

Apparently many Egyptians never heard of the adage “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” The secretary’s motorcade was pelted with tomatoes, shoes and plastic water bottles.
