Congressman Todd Akin tells NBC’s Today Show that he was called by his friend, Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, who urged him to drop out of the race for the U.S. Senate. But decided to remain a candidate as a matter of principle.

This after Akin referred to “legitimate rape” during a weekend TV interview.

Akin is also under attack for also incorrectly saying that a woman’s body oftentimes rejects pregnancy when she is raped.

“Anybody who does public speaking can make a mistake,” he said.
