TAMPA - Due to concerns over extreme weather in the Gulf Coast region, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus will promptly adjourn the first day of the GOP Convention in Tampa, Florida just ten minutes after calling it to order.
Priebus will also use the opportunity to unveil a “Debt Clock” in the convention hall to display the projected increase in the U.S. debt from the convention’s start till its end.
The first night of the convention was originally intended to feature House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Florida Governor Rick Scott. Scott has since canceled to monitor the storm and Boehner has rescheduled for Tuesday.
While the majority of the convention’s activities have been canceled, prominent party members are still holding events.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is holding a university-style lecture series titled “Newt U” with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker late Monday morning and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush will be attending a business roundtable in the afternoon.
The convention takes place from August 27th through the 30th.
