TAMPA - Mitt Romney officially clinched the Republican nomination for president early Tuesday evening during the first full day of the GOP’s 2012 convention in Tampa, Florida.
With just 70 days until the election, Romney surpassed the required 1,144 delegate threshold well before the roll call was completed and finished with support from 2,061 delegates.
When the nomination was secured, cheers erupted and the words Over The Top were displayed prominently on screens throughout Tampa Bay Times Forum.
Delegates for Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) trickled in and his supporters made sure their presence was recognized, cheering loudly each time a state cast votes backing the libertarian-leaning Texas congressman.
Romney is set to accept the nomination in remarks Thursday evening. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.), his Vice Presidential candidate, will formally join the ticket Wednesday night.
