TAMPA - In a news conference Monday morning at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida Russ Schreifer, a Romney campaign strategist, kept open the possibility of a Donald Trump appearance.
“Just because he isn’t here doesn’t mean he is not going to show up,” Schreifer said.
According to the RNC, Trump was scheduled to speak on Monday but was not available during the other days of the convention when the convention schedule changed in expectation of Hurricane Isaac.
Trump has been criticized as a controversial choice for speaking at the convention as he has questioned President Obama’s citizenship in the past.
RNC chairman Reince Preibus will gavel in the start of the convention and commencement of two debt clocks in the forum today. One of the clocks will show the cumulative total of United States debt while the second clock will begin at zero and run until House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) gavels closed the convention on Thursday.
The Romney campaign and the RNC have a “wait and see attitude” as they monitor the storm in the next few days, Schreifer said.
