AUTHORITIES PREPARE FOR DEMONSTRATIONS AS FRENCH MAGAZINE THREATENS TO PUBLISH CARTOON OF THE PROPHET MOHAMMED

The satire magazine Charlie Hebdo, which already once published a cartoon of the prophet Muhammad, is preparing to do so again, leading politicians to brace for the worst.

After a week of sometimes violent protests among segments of the Middle East’s Muslim population, there is fear that what seems like a deliberate provocation will cause another spasm of anger.

Khaled Elgindy of the US-based Brookings Institution tells Al Jazeera that the “provocateur” fringes on both sides are the ones benefitting most.
