Today the world celebrates the 95th birthday of Nelson Mandela, the South African leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient who is a universal symbol for peace and freedom. However, the iconic leader had been on the United States terrorist watch list up until 2008, 14 years after he became the first black president of South Africa following the fall of apartheid.
Mandela was a prominent leader of the African National Congress, a political group in South Africa which worked to overthrow the apartheid regime. The white minority who ruled the country from 1948 to 1994, deemed the ANC a terrorist organization during the 1970’s and 80’s. The United States followed suit.
