Syrian activists say that Syrian forces have bombed Damascus suburbs today where chemical weapons attacks are alleged to have taken place Wednesday.
Hundreds of people, including babies in diapers, are believed to have been killed in an apparent gas attack on rebel-held parts of eastern Damascus. Numbers range from 200 to 1,400 and are likely to rise further with hundreds more critically wounded. Despite images purporting to document the gas attack, nothing has been independently verified.
George Sabra, head of the main Syrian opposition group, laid the blame at the Assad regime: “This time it was for annihilation, rather than terror.” A Syrian official said “These are lies that serve the propaganda of the terrorists. We would not use such weapons.”
A senior U.S. administration official said Wednesday that the U.S. has “strong indications” the Syrian government employed chemical weapons in the attacks. “We need to do our due diligence and get all the facts and determine what steps need to be taken.”
