The Justice Department obtained a portfolio of information about a Fox News correspondent’s conversations and visits as part of an investigation into a possible leak, The Washington Post reported Monday - in the latest example of the government seizing records of journalists.

This follows the charge that the department secretly obtained two months of phone records from Associated Press journalists as part of a separate leak probe. DESPITE SCANDALS, OBAMA’S APPROVAL RATING REMAINS STEADY

His administration has been besieged by scandals. Questions about the handling of the Benghazi attack. IRS targeting of conservative groups. The seizing of reporter’s phone records at the AP in an attempt to find who leaked a story. And even “Umbrellagate” (yes, this is the BIG one, the president asking Marines to hold umbrellas over his head and a visiting dignitary in the rain).

But a new CNN poll finds that, even though he’s being criticized roundly for all of the above, his approval ratings remain steady.

OBAMA’S THURSDAY SPEECH IS ONE YOU’LL WANT TO WATCH

President Obama is scheduled to give a speech at the National Defense Institute Thursday that’s well worth listening to. That’s because, the Washington Post reports, the president is expected to discuss his failed promise (the administration blames Congress for this) to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. He’s also expected to address other counter-terrorism measures he’s overseeing, some of which are controversial. Including drone attacks.

It’s not known if he’ll say anything about the Justice Department’s seizing of AP reporter’s [phone records to figure out who leaked information about the thwarting of a new and improved underwear bombing plot.

BOB WOODWARD: IRS SCANDAL NOT WATERGATE – YET

Bob Woodward, the legendary journalist who was part of the Washington Post team that uncovered the Watergate scandal during the 70s, said Friday that the IRS’ recent trouble is not yet comparable to the notorious Nixon era coverup.

“I know there have been these comparisons to Watergate. I would say not yet,” Woodward said during an appearance on MNBC’s Morning Joe.

President Obama again told reporters that he learned only less than one week ago of an investigation into improper conduct at the IRS.

“My main concern,” he said, “is fixing a problem. And we began that process yesterday by asking and accepting the resignation of the acting director there.”

Obama was referring to former interim Commissioner Steven Miller, who was forced to leave his job. Miller, a career employee who had spent 25 years at the agency, was reportedly planning on stepping down on June 8. His dismissal, however, means that he is ineligible to return to the IRS in the future.

President Obama says the Justice Department’s secret seizure of Associated Press phone logs does not diminish his view of his close friend, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

Obama said he did not want to comment on a “specific and pending case,” but offered up a categorical defense of Holder, who has come under fire for several Justice Department actions taken during Obama’s presidency.

“I have complete confidence in Eric Holder as attorney general,” the president said. “He’s an outstanding attorney general and does his job with integrity, and I expect he will continue to do so.”

GOVERNMENT SPYING ON REPORTERS NOT THAT UNUSUAL

The scandal engulfing the Justice Department over government seizing the phone records of Associated Press reporters is causing quite the stir in Washington. But it’s far from the first time the government has done this.

According to Slate.com, back in 2004, the FBI perused 22 months of Washington Post and New York Times reporter’s phone records in an attempt to plug a leak. By the way, the Justice Department’s inspector general found that this was done without any legal process nor with the approval of the Attorney General..
