WAS TWA 800 FELLED BY A MISSILE?

A handful of aviation experts, including a number of investigators who were part of the original probe of TWA Flight 800, have come forward in a new documentary to say evidence points to a missile as the cause of the crash off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago.

The New York-to-Paris flight crashed July 17, 1996, just minutes after takeoff from JFK Airport, killing all 230 people aboard. In the weeks that followed, the plane was reassembled in a hangar from parts retrieved from the sea. But the cause of the crash was not identified immediately, and after authorities said the crash was caused by static electricity ignited fuel fumes, many skeptics cast doubt on the theory. Adding to the controversy were multiple eyewitness accounts of a fireball going up from the ground and hitting the plane before it went down, accounts which the FBI dismissed at the time. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an investigative agency that advocates on behalf of safety issues for Americans. They make recommendations and have no authority to change state or federal laws.

In May, 2013, the NTSB voted to recommend to states that they lower the blood-alcohol content that constitutes drunken driving. Nearly 10,000 people die each year from alcohol-related traffic accidents and 170,00 are injured. The NTSB recommends moving the current .08 to .05. Do you think that is too strict or that the U.S. would then have the strictest laws in the world? That wouldn’t be the case. Most countries in Europe and South America, as well as Russia and Australia have set levels at .05. Read more here.

ANOTHER ALLEGATION OF TSA SHAMING AN AIR TRAVELER

A 15-year-old girl – part of a high school group on a college outing – claims she was humiliated by a TSA agent who commented on her attire at screening and shamed her. In a posting by her father, a photo of what she was wearing is included. Showing she wasn’t even wearing revealing clothing at the time. Read more here.

SHOULD COPS BE PERMITTED TO CONFISCATE YOUR CELLPHONE IF YOU’RE IN AN ACCIDENT?

A state lawmaker in New Jersey has introduced legislation that would permit a cop to take your cellphone to determine if it was in use if you’re involved in a traffic crash. The ACLU, not surprisingly, opposes this. Read more here.

NEW YORK-BOUND EGYPTIAN AIRLINER DIVERTED DUE TO THREATENING NOTE

British aircraft were scrambled to intercept and escort an EgyptAir flight from Cairo to JFK after a passenger found a note threatening to blow up the plane. The note was discovered in a restroom. The plane, Flight 985, landing safely in Glasgow.

That’s why, on June 11, Ford Motor company is hosting an interactive event designed to make life behind the wheel safer for teenagers. Ford says it felt compelled to do this because vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teens in the United States.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were some 2,300 teen traffic fatalities in 2011.

HOMELAND SECURITY STUDY: BORDER AGENTS SHOULD CONTINUE TO SEARCH YOUR LAPTOP, CELLPHONE FOR DATA ON A HUNCH

U.S. border agents should continue to be allowed to search a traveler’s laptop, cellphone or other electronic device and keep copies of any data on them based on no more than a hunch, according to an internal Dept of Homeland Security study. It contends limiting such searches would prevent the U.S. from detecting child pornographers or terrorists and expose the government to lawsuits. The study argues the border searches don’t violate the First or Fourth Amendments

TSA DROPS PLAN TO ALLOW SMALL KNIVES ON PLANES

Flight attendants opposed the proposed change. So did sky marshals. And members of Congress. Now, bowing under pressure, the head of the TSA says plans to allow people to carry small knives on planes are being scrapped. John Pistole had argued allowing small knives on planes would freed TSA screeners to concentrate on scanning for explosives.

4 DEAD AS 2 SMALL PLANES CRASH OVER PHOENIX

Four people were killed Friday morning after two single-engine planes apparently collided above north Phoenix, authorities say.

A pilot reported seeing two small aircraft collide in midair about 15 miles northwest of Deer Valley Airport, according to Ian McGregor of the Federal Aviation Administration. Read more here.
