Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma) will insist that any federal aid to deal with the tornado in his home state must be offset by budget cuts.

“He will ask his colleagues to sacrifice lower priority areas of the budget to help Oklahoma,” spokesman John Hart said. Should other Republicans join Coburn, it could set up a fight similar to the January tug-of-war over Hurricane Sandy funding. That aid package was delayed by GOP opposition and ultimately passed with mostly Democratic support. Read more here.

The National Weather Service is feeling the effects of automatic budget cuts but says it was still able to give ample warning of Monday’s deadly tornado in Oklahoma.

The agency says it issued a tornado warning 16 minutes before Monday’s massive twister developed in Moore, giving thousands of residents time to take shelter even as the disaster claimed dozens of lives and destroyed schools, businesses and homes. Read more here.

OBAMA OFFERS SUPPORT TO OKLAHOMA TORNADO VICTIMS

In a brief statement at the White House, Obama called yesterday’s tornado ”one of the most destructive…in history.” He told the victims in Oklahoma that the country stands with them.

The twister, which tore through the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore yesterday, killed 24 people. Several of the victims were children, who were inside of an elementary school when it was ripped apart. The death toll is expected to rise today as crews continue digging through miles of rubble. Read more here.
