THEY DID IT AGAIN; KOREA FIRES ANOTHER SHORT RANGE MISSILE

While the immediate threat of launching medium or long range missiles which would necessarily result in a response from the West seems to have abated, North Korea seems intent on reminding the world that it can still fire off missiles. So, for the second day in a row, South Korean officials say, North Korea has fired a short range missile harmlessly into the sea.

The previous launch was of three missiles and resulted in condemnation from the usual critics, including UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon.

SYRIA AIMS MISSILES AT ISRAEL

Syria has aimed its considerable ballistic missile arsenal at Israel’s heavily populated Greater Tel Aviv area, according to Middle East sources cited by London’s Sunday Times.

According to the report, the regime of embattled Syrian dictator Bashar Assad will launch the missiles at Israel should the Jewish state carry out one more aerial strike inside Syria. Read more here.

REPORT: RETRIBUTION FOR BENGHAZI MAY BE NEAR

CNN reports that the U.S. military has updated plans to “capture or kill” alleged perpetrators of the Benghazi attacks. Officials emphasized that military planning has been underway since the immediate aftermath of the armed assault.

CNN said the story is the result of several days of reporting. It wasn’t offered to CNN by officials as part of any coordinated effort to reach out to the media, the network says.

One part of the plan calls for potentially putting U.S. military personnel on the ground inside Libya, if ordered by President Obama. The military has a list of several targets, some inside Benghazi and others in outlying areas, individuals and groups.

REPORT: STEVENS DECLINED ADDED SECURITY IN BENGHAZI

McClatchy reports that U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens – one of the four people killed in the Benghazi attacks – twice turned down offers of security assistance made by Army Gen. Carter Ham, then the head of U.S. Africa Command, in response to concerns Stevens had raised in a secret memo.

Why he did so remains unclear. McClatchy reports that two unnamed govenment officials told them the information. “He didn’t say why, he just turned it down,” an unnamed defense official told McClatchy.
